Here is something worth flying to Cape Town- to see the brilliant pianist Kate Liu. The Chopin Competition Laurette is giving one recital in South Africa, in Cape Town on Friday, September 23, 2022, in the Baxter Concert Hall. She is also conducting a masterclass at UCT on September 21. She is being brought out to SA, by Dr Sicelo Nkwanyana. He saw Kate Liu, on a livestream, playing, at the 17th International Fryderyk Copin Competition, Poland, in 2015 and was bowled over. Here she is, heading for the Mother City- one recital and one masterclass. Info as supplied:

Brilliant pianist Kate Liu will give one recital in South Africa– in Cape Town on Friday, September 23, 2022, Baxter Concert Hall and one masterclass at UCT on September 21, 2022

Kate Liu will perform Schumann Arabesque in C, Sonatas by Prokofiev (No. 8) and Beethoven (Op. 110), two Nocturnes by Chopin (Op, 27, Nos 1 and 2) and Ballade No. 1 by Chopin. Ms Liu, who came to international acclaim after winning the Bronze Medal and Best Mazurka Prize at the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Warsaw, Poland in 2015, was also awarded the audience prize by the Polish public on Polish National Radio.  Born in Singapore, Ms Liu moved to America when she was eight, where she graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, She studied privately at the Music Institute in Chicago and is currently completing a graduate degree at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.

Ms Liu has also won First Prize at both the Third Asia-Pacific International Chopin Competition and the New York International Piano Competition. In a few short years, she has gained international recognition which has taken her to some of the most important venues globally from Carnegie’s Weill Hall, to La Maison Symphonique de Montréal, Kennedy Center in Washington and the  Shanghai Concert Hall, She has collaborated with orchestras such as the  Cleveland Orchestra, Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and Polish Radio Orchestra. Her debut album of works by Chopin was released on the Fryderyk Chopin Institute label in 2016.

For Dr Esthea Kruger, piano lecturer at UCT who is presenting Ms Liu in masterclass, Kate Liu is an exceptional young pianist.

When I heard her on the Chopin competition, I just knew I would bring her to perform in South Africa.”

Update: By popular demand, Kate Lui has changed her programme for her single recital on Friday, September 23 at the Baxter Concert Hall to devote the entire first half of her concert Chopin. Her programme will be now consist of Chopin Nocturne op. 27 no. 1 in C# minor, Mazurka op. 50 no. 3 in C# minor , Waltz op. 70 no. 3 in D-flat, Waltz op. 64 no. 3 in A-flat, Mazurka op. 59 no. 3 in F# minor, Waltz op. 69 no. 2 in B minor, Mazurka op. 68 no. 4 in F minor and Nocturne op. 27 no. 2 in D-flat, followed in the second half by Schumann Arabesque in C and a Sonatas by Prokofiev (No. 8).
