I had so much fun watching The Complete Works of Shakespeare Abridged, performed by Faeron Wheeler, Daniel Enticott and Kim R2 which is on February 26 to March 7, 2026 at the Masque, Cape Town. This farcical bricolage of all 37 of Shakespeare’s plays was written and first staged in 1987 by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. The conceptual arc: Three performers, in tights, hurtle through all of Shakespeare’s 37 plays, in under two hours, parodying, satirising the Bard, themes and characters. In the first half, the performers unpack 36 plays. The 2nd half is dedicated to Hamlet – dished up in various permutations. They toss in dollops of audience participation and improv, observations about geo-politics and the Bard’s CV. The performers use their own names and personas as they get their teeth into the script and effectively make it their own.
Faeron Wheeler, Daniel Enticott and Kim R2 performed Abridged ten years ago in Cape Town and now they are back, in their leggings (not tights), reviving that production and it is a hoot. Ten years later, topical references have been updated in the first half. I don’t think that Ozempic and Netflix was around a decade ago and the trio have updated their own script for 2026. It is whip fast, clever (listen carefully) and entertaining.
With all the hilarity and mirth, I was teared up and moved by Daniel Enticott in the Hamlet half, presenting the rousing, What a Piece of Man, Hamlet Act II, Scene 2. Bravo Enticott and bravo for the multiple wardrobe changes – slip-sliding between genders and characters. Impressive performances by the thespians who clearly love and adore the Bard. Their knowledge, enthusiasm and energy is captivating. Quirky props and wardrobe (particularly Endicott’s) heightens their cheeky and madcap take on Will Shakes. This production whets the appetite for more Shakespeare. Get there. Short season. February 26 to March 7, 2026.
