I saw The Tramp, starring Daniel Anderson, last night, October 8, 2025 in the Artscape, Arena, Cape Town. After the performance and a rapturous ovation from the full house, Anderson welcomed his 92 year old grandmother, Beryl Anderson on to the stage. She flew from East London to be there. Anderson dedicated the performance to her and shared with us that she had said that she would never fly again. But she did, she caught a plane from her home in East London and then stood on stage with her grandson. How special. Catch this brilliant artist in this evocation of Charlie Chaplin and his “relationship” with alter ego, The “Tramp”. Or Chaplin’s nemesis? It’s a homage and a lament. Tour de force performance. Anderson is 25. Remarkable. He is accompanied on piano by the fabulous Paul Ferreira as a second performer. This run ends Saturday- yes – October 11, 2025. Hopefully there will be more seasons in Cape Town. A shout out to Amanda Bothma of Wêla Kapela Productions – writer of the script, director and producer. And a shout-out to Daphne Kuhn who co-produced the premiere season in Johannesburg. Beautiful theatre.
I was bowled over by the performance, conceptual arc, songs and design. There is a lot to process, so I am going again. This is your sign to catch the last performances of this run – tonight Thursday – October 9, tomorrow Friday October 10 and Saturday October 11 at 7pm. In addition to the evening performance on Saturday, there is a performance at 2pm.
