Five years ago, Jan Malan and his partner Greg Meyer opened Die Koelkamers, a theatre at The Paternoster Waterfront. The theatre opened March 2021. The pandemic was still with us but in those challenging times, they birthed their theatre in what was once a cold storage facility for crayfish. The vision was to create a hub for theatre, musical events, visual art, photography, conversations, book events and more. They envisaged a space which would hold space for the community in Paternoster. And it has become a hub at the Paternoster Waterfront, gathering in locals and visitors from afar. It is more than a theatre, it is a destination and experience. In celebration of Die Koelkamer’s 5th birthday, on March 15, 2926, they are staging, Omwentelinge ’n Papierspel (Revolutions – A Paper Play). This music theatre production, stars two legends, icons: Koos Kombuis and Jana Cilliers. Note the show starts at noon. Stay after and dine at one of the restaurants on the Paternoster Waterfront and linger, to watch the sunset. Read on for more about Omwentelinge – ’n Papierspel which “weaves together word, music and memory in a moving and sometimes challenging exploration of personal and collective transformation”. Five Years of Dreams, Courage and Drama: Die Koelkamers Celebrates with “Omwentelinge – ’n Papierspel”

Paternoster – Five years ago, a dream was born on the West Coast: an intimate theatre where stories are told truthfully, where live music resonates, and where artists and audiences can truly connect. Today, Die Koelkamers Theatre proudly celebrates its fifth anniversary – a milestone that reflects passion, perseverance and the power of community.

To mark this special occasion, the theatre presents the compelling music theatre production “Omwentelinge – ’n Papierspel” (“Revolutions – A Paper Play”), featuring acclaimed actress Jana Cilliers and legendary singer-songwriter Koos Kombuis.

A Powerful Creative Collaboration

Jana Cilliers is one of South Africa’s most respected stage and screen actresses. Over several decades she has established herself as an artist of remarkable depth and integrity. Known for her intense, nuanced performances and her ability to portray complex characters with emotional intelligence, she has appeared in numerous award-winning theatre productions, television series and films. Her stage presence is both powerful and subtle – a combination that places her among the country’s leading dramatic artists.

Koos Kombuis (born André le Roux du Toit) is an iconic Afrikaans singer, songwriter and author. He rose to prominence in the 1980s as one of the key figures of the Voëlvrybeweging, an alternative music movement that challenged the political and cultural status quo of the time. His honest, satirical and often deeply moving lyrics established him as a unique voice in Afrikaans culture. In addition to his music career, he is a prolific writer of novels, essays and memoirs, and is widely regarded today as a true cultural legend.

More Than Just Theatre

Since its inception, Die Koelkamers Theatre has become far more than a traditional performance space. In addition to drama and music theatre productions, the venue regularly hosts live music concerts, intimate acoustic performances and special cultural evenings. It has developed into a dynamic space where theatre, music and community intersect – a unique cultural destination on the West Coast.

A Celebration of Change and Community

“Omwentelinge – ’n Papierspel” weaves together word, music and memory in a moving and sometimes challenging exploration of personal and collective transformation. With Cilliers’ masterful interpretative ability and Kombuis’ iconic voice and lyrics, the production promises to resonate deeply with audiences.

“This fifth anniversary is not only a celebration of time, but of community, artistry, and the power of both stage and music,” say Jan Malan and Greg Meyer of Die Koelkamers Theatre.

Tickets for “Omwentelinge – ’n Papierspel” are limited and early booking is strongly recommended.
